18th Century Louis XVI Gentleman Commode

18th Century Louis XVI Gentleman Commode

$6,500.00

Louis XVI marble-top commode featuring Tulip wood, rose wood and King wood veneers throughout. Built using oak secondary woods. The highly polished granite marble top is in impeccable condition with no previous damage or repairs of any kind. The sides of the cabinet are also in excellent condition and have no evidence of previous climactic splits present which typically plagued these types of cabinets. The original brass hardware is complete. The exterior veneer is complete and tight to the cabinet. The interior shelves are fitted with three suspended drawers in oak and bird’s-eye maple. The leather insert on the top has been replaced with new leather. The veneer was recently French polished throughout. This is a prime example of a butlers style French commode. This is an exquisite statement piece to build around. This commode was also stamped and numbered by the Eboniste on the top and the back. Made in France, circa 1780-1790.

Repaired: This item was in good condition when it came into our studio. There were some areas of loose veneer which is common with this type of commode. We reset all of the veneer using hide glues. Replacements made: The leather top for the writing surface was missing when this item was acquired at auction. The top was replaced with a nice quality leather hide. Wear consistent with age and use.
